The "Hölle" nature reserve is located in the southern Upper Palatinate in Bavaria. It encompasses an approximately 600 meter long section of the Höllbachtal with surrounding forest areas. Höllbach is one of the Wiesent section names .
The nature reserve, first designated by ordinance in 1950, is located in the much larger FFH area DE-6939-302 Bachtäler in the Falkensteiner Vorwald . This makes it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .
location
The Hell is located four kilometers southwest of Falkenstein between Brennberg and Rettenbach in Falkensteiner Vorwald . The area mainly belongs to the municipality of Rettenbach located in the southern district of Cham , a small portion of a good two hectares is in the municipality of Brennberg in the district of Regensburg . The part of the nature reserve located in the Cham district is also part of the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park .
geology
The Höllbachtal is an approx. 18 ha large rock valley in the Falkensteiner Vorwald forest, which is characterized by countless, mighty gneiss and granite blocks piled on top of each other. During the last ice age they weathered in situ from the rock of the basement to form a sea of boulders. At this point the rock appears in a particularly impressive form of wool sack weathering and is largely covered by moss.
The sea of blocks along the Höllbach, an approximately 7000 square meter section of the nature reserve, is listed as a geotope.
Stream
The valley is traversed by a stream, later called Wiesent , which is fed from many smaller source streams near Wiesenfelden . Initially gently meandering, the water flows under the names "Rossbach" and "Arracher Bach", reaches the upper end of the valley at "Rettenbach / Postfelden" and is now called "Höllbach". It now flows as a wild mountain stream in numerous veins through the rocky landscape and breaks out in small waterfalls and cascades from under the mighty granite blocks . In the western part of the nature reserve, the Ruderszeller Bach , which also forms the municipality and district boundary, flows into the Höllbach from the right. The brook continues past Dosmühle and south of Brennberg to Wörth where it finally flows into the Danube.
natural reserve
The tree population consists mainly of resilient linden forest , which can withstand ice drifts and floods better than spruce and beech trees . In the shady climate, which is cool and damp even in summer, numerous animal and plant species that are worthy of protection have been preserved. Above the nature reserve, part of the water is dammed or diverted to generate electricity , which is why on some days, especially in summer, only a narrow trickle can be seen. Nevertheless, a large number of significant habitats have been preserved that are typical of the stream valleys of the Falkensteiner Vorwald forest . The valley is largely preserved in its natural state. Dying trees and dead wood are not removed.
tourism
The area is a popular hiking and excursion destination. A circular hiking trail follows the natural course of the terrain.
