The Pfatterer Au is a 359 hectare nature reserve belonging to the municipality of Pfatter north of Pfatter and south of the Danube in the district of Regensburg , Bavaria . The reserve includes Stromtalwiesen, Danubian backwaters with silting areas and floodplain vegetation . It is also a resting, breeding and wintering area for rare bird species such as the curlew , which has its only breeding occurrence here in the Regensburg district. The expansion of the Danube , however, reduced the flow dynamics of the river, which had a negative effect on the floodplain areas. The Stöcklwörth nature reserve connects to the north of the Danube, and the Gmünder Au nature reserve to the east .
The course of the old Danube meander can be clearly seen, and the impact slope has been preserved. It is designated as a geotope (375R034) by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment .
