Goal United is a Flash -based football - Manager - Browser game that from that Hamburg company northworks is developed. The first public beta version started in 2006. In August 2009 Goalunited had a player count of over 1,750,000. It is currently the only browser game played in the ESL .

In 2010, in addition to the original Goalunited, a new version called Goalunited 2011 was presented. The old version remained playable as an independent project under the name “Goalunited Classic” until August 2014. In July 2015, another version called Goalunited PRO was published, which, in addition to completely overhauled graphics and slightly changed gameplay, also included new operating concepts to make it easier to use on tablets. On October 18, 2017, northworks announced the discontinuation of Goalunited PRO; the reason given was a lack of profitability. Currently (as of July 2020) only the former Goalunited 2011 can be played, which is now called Goalunited Legends .

Gameplay

After registration, each player receives a club that starts in one of the lowest leagues in their country. There are currently 45 countries with the Classic version, sometimes with several thousand leagues in up to 11 levels. In the current version, Goalunited 2011, 44 countries with several thousand leagues in up to ten league levels are at the start. The (fictional) players in the starting team are not particularly good at first, but the manager can improve his team through training, transfers and youth work.

At Goalunited Classic, a league consists of ten teams, so each team plays 18 league games per season with home and away games. These usually take place weekly, on Saturdays, and two English weeks are played per season, with a league game also being played on Wednesdays. The league cup, which usually takes place on Wednesday, will be interrupted on these days. There is a short break at the end of the season.

A league at Goalunited 2011 consists of twelve teams, with 22 league games being played per season. These take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The league cup played on Wednesday at Goalunited Classic has been moved to a Monday at Goalunited 2011. There is also a short break in the game at the end of the season.

A special feature that sets Goalunited apart from other football manager games is the way the transfer market works. The manager first sells his players at a fixed market value to the "bank", from which other managers can then purchase the players in an auction. The prices achieved here in turn affect the market value. This largely prevents clubs from being pushed by paying excessive prices .

Another special feature is the staging of international competitions. The managers of a country vote on the tactics and line-up of the national team. The 2008 European Football Championship was the only competition that was re-enacted in this way.

Stadium environment

The player has the option of erecting buildings in the vicinity of the stadium, e.g. B. improve training or provide additional income or a better reputation for the club. These buildings include: B. a factory to produce fan articles, a shop to sell these articles, medical buildings to hire a physiotherapist, doctor and mental trainer , training area / hall, a kiosk and travel options for spectators, e.g. B. a parking lot and a bus stop. Each of these buildings has several expansion stages. Decorative buildings can be built on four other spaces for so-called GU-STARS (premium currency that can be bought for real money). These include a park, a lake, the manager's house, football monuments, fountains and a mini golf course.

Championships and cups

A season at Goalunited Classic lasts 17 weeks - so three championships can be played every year. In the first 16 weeks, the 18 league games are played, in the following week the champions and runners-up from two neighboring leagues play for promotion in playoffs, this system applies up to league 6, all clubs below that are promoted directly and therefore have no competitive games this week . Relegation cannot be fought in play-offs, in contrast to Goalunited 2011, there is only promotion relegation.

At Goalunited 2011 a season lasts about 12 weeks - so four and a half championships can be played every year. In the first eleven weeks, with the first game being played on a Saturday and the last game on a Wednesday, the 22 league games are played; in the remainder of the week, runners-up and higher-tier clubs that have landed on relegation relegation places form a play- Off League with six teams in which four teams from the lower division and two teams from the higher division fight for promotion and relegation. Play-offs are played up to the 6th league, in lower leagues you go straight up or down.

In addition, since the fourth season at Goalunited Classic and since the second season at Goalunited 2011, a national cup has been played. The 13,650 teams from the top six leagues compete in a joint competition. The lower leagues have their own competitions and thus their own trophies. In addition, since the tenth season at Goalunited 2011 there has been an international competition, the so-called "International Masters". All clubs that have qualified for the top half of the table in the first half of the season, ie after eleven match days, have qualified for the "International Masters Gold". Everyone else for the "International Masters Silver". A total of 128 international clubs are represented in one of these tournaments. They are roughly all equally strong. The difference between the gold and silver version is that with the gold version, for example, more spectators come to the stadium and thus more revenue can be gained.

Awards

Goalunited has received a number of awards. Among other things, it was voted the browser game with the best graphics in 2006 by the users of the Galaxy News portal . In the opinion of the online edition of Computer Bild Spiele magazine, the game is particularly convincing due to its appealing interface . The users of the Gamesdynamite portal voted Goalunited for the 2007 super browser game in the Big Games category (over 10,000 players) . In 2006 the game landed in the renowned German Developer Award in the category Best German Browser Game , 3rd place. In 2007, northworks was able to achieve 2nd place among the audience prizes in the category Best Sports Game with the version goalunited 2007 at the German Developer Award . In 2011 goalunited was nominated for the best German browser game at the "German Computer Game Award", which was co-financed by the federal government, and came in second behind Die Siedler Online .

financing

The game is partially financed by paid premium accounts . These do not offer any gaming advantages, but additional features that are intended to increase the fun of the game. This includes the display of pictures of the players, the possibility to upload a club logo and additional competitions, the so-called United Cups , United Leagues and United Tournaments .

Another mainstay of financing is advertising . Each club can negotiate a contract with a sponsor . These are computer-controlled, but have the names and logos of real, sometimes well-known companies or products, such as McDonald’s or Adidas . A mouse click on the sponsor's logo leads to the company's website.

In contrast to the Classic version, Goalunited 2011 also offers gaming advantages. Like the Ballersunited from the same manufacturer, the game is based on the principle of trading card games .
