The Gobiosomatini are a tribe of the gobies (Gobiidae). Fish from this group, which in English are called "American seven-spined gobies" because of their seven dorsal fin spines, live close to the coast in the sea on both sides of the American double continent and in fresh waters. The distribution area extends in the east from Massachusetts to Argentina and in the west from the Gulf of California to Chile . Some genera occur only on the Atlantic or Pacific side, but most of them are found on both sides of America. The Caribbean is particularly rich in species . Many of the species found there are endemic here . A total of over 130 species from 28 genera belong to the Gobiosomatini. They represent about 40% of the goby genera occurring in the New World and about 50% of the goby species of the New World.
The Gobiosomatini show a great diversity in terms of their colors, their ecology and their behavior. Some are found in shallow fresh water , others in the brackish water of estuaries. In the sea they occur in rock and coral reefs as well as on mud, gravel or mussel gravel soils and on hard soils with or without algae growth.
features
Like almost all gobies, the gobiosomatini are small, elongated fish that are only a few centimeters long. The features that are mentioned to diagnose the gobiosomini include seven dorsal fin spines, a dorsal fin pterygiophore pattern of 3-221110 (in all genera except Evermannichthys , Pariah and Risor ), a vertebra number of 11 + 16-17 (in all genera with the exception of Evermannichthys and Pariah ) and the merging of Hypuralia 1 + 2 with 3 + 4 (in all genera with the exception of Aboma , Akko , Bollmannia , Microgobius , Palatogobius and Parrella ).
