Gobitec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gobitec is an energy project with the aim of generating electricity in the deserts of Mongolia and China in northeast Asia using solar energy and transporting it using HVDC technology to areas of high demand in China, Japan and Korea, where it is to be consumed. In its basic concept, it corresponds to the Desertec project , which provides for the generation of electricity from renewable sources in the MENA region , which is to be consumed partly on site and partly in Europe.

Story and project

The Gobitec project was proposed in 2009 by Bernhard Seliger and Professor Gi-Eun Kim from the South Korean branch of the Hanns Seidel Foundation , who were based on the Desertec project. Solar thermal power plants are to be used , which are to be installed in the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts . With over 300 days of sunshine a year, low humidity and low temperatures, the Gobi Desert is an ideal place for solar thermal power plants. According to an estimate, more than 21,400 TWh of electrical energy can be produced annually on 3% of the area of the Gobi, the total area of which is approx. 1.3 million km² , which could theoretically more than cover the world electricity demand of 2008. With prices for the installed photovoltaic modules of 4 US dollars per watt , the cost of electricity would be 18 US cents per kWh, with a module price of one dollar per watt it would be 7 US cents.

The initiators claim several advantages: North Asia's electricity needs should be covered with a clean and low-carbon energy source, economic and political cooperation between several states should be enabled and North Korea should also be involved in a non-nuclear , partnership-based energy project. On the other hand, Sovacool and Cooper a. the high costs of the large-scale project and the technology chosen, the political and technical feasibility and the potential negative impact on Mongolian society if the project were poorly implemented. They consider a more decentralized structure using various renewable energies such as wind energy , photovoltaics , geothermal energy and biomass , which are distributed across the countries, combined with a significant improvement in energy efficiency to be more expedient and faster to implement.

According to a study by the Fraunhofer Institutes ISE and ISI , on the other hand, photovoltaic systems and wind turbines should be used instead of solar thermal power plants . In addition to the above-mentioned states, Russia is also to be included in the supergrid to be constructed .

In March 2013, five partner organizations signed a memorandum of understanding in order to prepare a regional study "Gobitec and the Asian Super Grid" on renewable energy sources in Northeast Asia.

reception

Chatzivasileiadis, et al. see projects such as Gobitec, Desertec, MedGrid and Atlantic Wind Connection as the starting point for a globally linked power network, with which new, previously unused locations could be used for the production of green electricity and thus global CO 2 emissions could be reduced. Tsachiagiin Elbegdordsch , President of Mongolia , emphasized in his speech to the German Bundestag that the Gobitec project had "an enormous response from experts" and called for more cooperation in infrastructure projects . Chancellor Angela Merkel named Gobitec at the joint press conference as an example of a possible cooperation in the field of renewable energies .

At the UN ESCAP's Asia and Pacific Energy Forum 2013 , Gobitec was presented as a possible component of an “Asian Energy Highway”.
