The Goethe Museum Düsseldorf, which opened in 1956, is one of the three representative Goethe museums in Germany , alongside the Goethe House in Frankfurt am Main and the Goethe National Museum in Weimar.

The museum is supported by the Anton-und-Katharina-Kippenberg-Foundation and the state capital Düsseldorf . With the act of purchasing the Goethe collection from Kippenberg, the city of Düsseldorf has "created a new field of charisma for Goethe". In the foundation contract of February 13, 1953, the city of Düsseldorf undertook to equip, maintain and develop the museum.

The museum has been managed by Christof Wingertszahn since 2013 . He is in personal union at the same time managing director of Anton and Catherine's Kippenberg Foundation.

Former directors were:

The institution includes the museum, the manuscript archive, the research library, the art collection and an event center. It houses around 50,000 original testimonials from Goethe's time, "including autographs (letters, work manuscripts, entries in the archive, music manuscripts), first editions and dedicatory copies, graphics (portraits, vedute, illustrations), hand drawings (of which approximately 50 by Goethe), oil paintings, silhouettes, Busts, masks, coins, medals and plaques as well as a porcelain and glass collection ”. The collection is supplemented by an extensive collection of sheet music from works by Goethe and his contemporaries set to music, text and song books, theater slips and concert and festival programs from Goethe's time

What was once the largest private collection on Goethe and his time was brought together by the publisher Anton Kippenberg (1874–1950). His daughters brought the collection to the independent Anton-und-Katharina-Kippenberg-Foundation. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the museum, the literary historian Conrad Wiedemann called it a "phenomenal private collection that was created in the first half of the 20th century - that is, during two world wars, the global economic crisis and Nazi rule".

The museum and its collection were initially housed in the Hofgärtnerhaus , the former baroque-style residence of the incumbent court gardener. The Goethe Museum has been located in the Rococo Jägerhof Palace since 1987 and, in addition to the 1,000 exhibits on the permanent exhibition on Goethe's life and work, offers changing exhibitions on the history of the arts and literature. To mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, in 2017 the museum organized an exhibition on Goethe and Luther entitled Bible, Language, Truthfulness . In 2018, in a highly acclaimed exhibition - Deeds of Light - Goethe's color theory was juxtaposed with the work of ZERO artist Heinz Mack . In 2019, photos by the photographer Helmut Schlaiß were exhibited, which he had made in Goethe's footsteps in Italy.

A connection between Düsseldorf and Goethe exists through his two visits (1774 and 1792) to the house of the philosopher Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi , which is only a few steps away from Schloss Jägerhof and which Goethe considered the most hospitable of all houses during his “Campagne in France” “Designated.
