Andreas Bruno Wachsmuth (born November 30, 1890 in Reetzerhütten ; † November 24, 1981 in Mittenwald ) was a German specialist in German studies , literary scholar , grammar school teacher and long-time president of the German Goethe Society in Weimar.

Life

After attending school, Wachsmuth studied German at the Berlin University and, after completing his state examination (1920) and doctorate (1921 in Rostock), worked as a teacher , first in Hohenlychen , and from 1928 at the Arndt-Gymnasium Dahlem . In 1949 he became director of this school and worked in this position until he retired in 1956.

In 1949, Wachsmuth took over the editing of the Goethe Society's yearbook, succeeding the late Hans Wahl . In 1950 he became President of the Goethe Society as successor to Anton Kippenberg , although he was West Berlin . In 1971 he handed over this position and the editor of the yearbook to Helmut Holtzhauer and became honorary president of the Goethe Society. He made a significant contribution to the fact that the Goethe Society continued to exist during his tenure as an all-German institution with its headquarters in Weimar and, like hardly any other organization, was able to survive the division of Germany into East and West undivided. Even after his retirement, Wachsmuth took on numerous other offices and was among other things a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin and editor of the Dahlemer Blätter published by the Arndt-Gymnasium .

The City of Frankfurt am Main awarded Wachsmuth the Goethe Plaque in 1955 , and the Goethe Society the Golden Goethe Medal in 1970 . In 1972 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for services to German literature, culture and especially Goethe research .

His son was the classical philologist Dietrich Wachsmuth .
