Volkmar Hansen

Volkmar Hansen (born April 16, 1945 in Burg near Magdeburg ) is a German literary scholar . From 1993 to 2012 he was director of the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf.

Live and act

After attending school in Frankfurt am Main (Textor Volksschule, Carl Schurz Gymnasium) and Bonn (Friedrich Ebert Gymnasium), Volkmar Hansen passed the school leaving examination in 1966. He then studied German and history at the University of Bonn (1966–1969) and the University of Düsseldorf (1969–1974), where he received his doctorate in 1974 with the dissertation of Thomas Mann's Heine Reception . In 1989 he qualified as a professor for modern German literary studies.

From 1974 to 1992 he was the chief editor of the historical-critical complete edition of Heine's works published by Manfred Windfuhr .

From 1993 to 2012 Hansen was executive director of the Anton and Katharina Kippenberg Foundation and director of the Goethe Museum (Düsseldorf) . From 1995 to 2007 he was a member of the board of directors of the Goethe Society , from 1999 its vice-president.

Hansen is honorary professor at the Institute for German Studies at Düsseldorf University and two honorary doctorates from Akaki Tsereteli University in Kutaisi (Georgia) and the Moscow State Open Pedagogical University (MGOPU). From 2002 to 2012 he was chairman of the working group of independent cultural institutes and from 2003 to 2012 a member of the German Commission for UNESCO

Awards

  • Awarded the Italian Order of Merit with the rank of Commendatore (2004)
  • Awarded the Portuguese Order of Saint Michael, House Order of the Bragança Royal Family, with the rank of Comendador (2008)
  • Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (2011)
