history

House II ( location )
House I 1958

On October 12, 1903, the municipal secondary school in Ilmenau was founded, which made it possible for the first time to graduate from secondary school in Ilmenau. It was initially in the old school building on the Topfmarkt behind the Ilmenau town hall. Other locations were later the buildings of today's Pestalozzi School and the Ilmenau College . On May 20, 1920, the Realschule was converted into a Reform Realgymnasium, where the Abitur could now also be taken. In 1922, the Goetheschule moved into today's House I in the Ilmenau spa district on the edge of the forest. On October 20 of the same year the grammar school was named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . During his time in Weimar, he often stayed in Ilmenau and played an important role in the city's culture, which is why the school was named after him.

Towards the end of the Second World War , the school building served as a hospital . In the period from 1945 to 1951, it was initially converted into a single school for grades 5 to 12. After that, it was reserved for grades 9 to 12 again. In the period between 1983 and 1991, only classes 11 and 12 were accommodated at the Extended Oberschule (EOS). In 1963, special mathematical classes were introduced for the first time , which in 1981 were expanded to include a scientific-technical direction and which still exist today.

After the reunification , the school was converted into a grammar school. The school building in Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse (House II), which today houses classes 5 to 8, was added to the main building on the outskirts of the city .

In the 2007/2008 school year, 56 teachers worked at the school, which was attended by 507 students.
