The golden-eye fly ( Chrysops relictus ) is a fly from the family of the horsefly (Tabanidae).

features

The golden eye brake reaches a body size of nine to fourteen millimeters and is very strikingly colored. The mesonotum and scutellum are glossy black with brown-yellow hair, the pleura have black stripes of hair. The top of the second tergite on the abdomen is pale yellow with two black spots. The third and fourth tergites are black and each have light yellow triangles, the tergites on the fifth to seventh abdominal segment in males and from third to seventh in females are black and have a pale yellowish border. The transparent wings are colored like a mosaic with brown spots, at the tip there is an extensive brown spot. The thighs ( femora ) are colored black, the rails ( tibia ) of the middle pairs of legs are yellow-brownish, but have a dark tip. The compound eyes are green and meet in the male. The lower part of the face is dusted yellow, the front triangle is shiny black. The antennae are black, the first member being slightly thickened in the males, that of the females is slimmer and occasionally colored yellow. The palps are black.

Similar species

The common blind horse ( Chrysops caecutiens ) is very similar to the species, but has black tibiae on the middle pair of legs and the wing spot does not extend to cell R2.

Occurrence

The species occurs in Central , Southern and Northern Europe and flies from May to August.

The golden eye fly plays a major role in the transmission of Francisella tularensis , the causative agent of tularemia .
