The golden arowana ( Scleropages aureus ) is a predatory fish from the family of osteoglossids (Osteoglossidae).
description
The Golden Arowana has an elongated and slender body, laterally flattened. The paratypes examined at the first description were 27.6 to 35.5 cm long. The body height is about a quarter to a third of the standard length . The head is taller than it is long, the width is less than 3/4 of the head length. The mouth is inclined, the gap in the mouth does not reach below the rear ends of the eyes. There are two short, thick barbels at the tip of the lower jaw . The pectoral fins are long (more than 3/4 the standard length) and reach the base of the pelvic fins, which are only half the length of the pectoral fins. The anal fin is short and only half as long as the dorsal fin.
The back, dorsal fin and the upper third of the caudal fin are dark in color. The rest of the caudal fin and anal fin are reddish or light brown in color. In juvenile fish, the gill cover, the large scales on the sides, the belly side and the pectoral and pelvic fins are silver with a golden sheen. With increasing age, these parts become more and more bright gold.
- Fin formula : dorsal 15–20, anal 26–28, pectoral 7, ventral 5.
- Dandruff formula SL 24–26.
distribution
The golden arowana occurs in small rainforest lakes in the Siak area near Pekanbaru and along the Batanghari in Berbak National Park on the Indonesian island of Sumatra . The waters carry tannin- colored black water with a pH value of less than 5.5.
The bluish bonesweed population found on the Malay Peninsula in the Malay state of Pahang resembles the Golden Arowana in terms of body dimensions and tail color and must possibly be assigned to this species. However, since no type specimen was available for a taxonomic investigation, it is still considered a color morph of the Asiatic forked beard ( Scleropages formosus ).
Reproduction
Like all bone-lickers, the golden arowana is a mouthbrooder .
Systematics
The Golden Arowana was originally considered color morph of the Asian Fork Barts ( Scleropages formosus ) until 2003 as a separate species described was. Its sister species and thus the closest relative is the Red Arowana ( Scleropages legendrei ) from Kalimantan .
