Guy Teugels

Guy G. Teugels (born June 17, 1954 , † June 22, 2003 ) was a Belgian ichthyologist . His research focus was the catfish and other freshwater fish of Africa and Southeast Asia.

Life

After completing his master's degree in biology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), Teugels began studying gill sacs (Clariidae) at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren near Brussels in Belgium from 1977 under the direction of Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde . In 1983 he was awarded a Ph.D. PhD.

In 1984 Teugels worked at the Laboratoire d'Ichtyologie Générale et Appliquée in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, where he continued the work of Jacques Daget (1919–2009) on African fish. During his years in Paris, Teugels worked a lot with colleagues from the French ORSTOM (now IRD, l ' Institut de recherche pour le développement ) who were very active in West Africa.

In 1988 Teugels took over as curator of the ichthyological department of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, succeeding Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde and Max Poll . In 1996, a curatorial position was created that focused on the cichlid fauna of the African Great Lakes . Teugels was responsible for collecting the non-cichlids. During his time in Tervuren, Teugels made frequent research trips to West Africa and Central Africa , where he worked closely with French scientists. He visited many countries in the region including Ivory Coast , Cameroon , Congo-Brazzaville , Gabon and Benin . Teugels saw the training of African ichthyologists as an important aspect of his project work. His research focused on the taxonomy and biodiversity of African freshwater fish. Through his projects and students, he was also involved in areas of aquaculture and fisheries . The main interests of Teugels included the catfish, particularly the gill sacs, of which he described many new species. Teugels also worked on a project on the catfish from Southeast Asia.

Teugels has authored over 100 specialist articles in peer-reviewed journals, almost a third of them as the first author. Many come from his early creative phase. He wrote numerous other scientific observations and reports. In 1990 and 1992, alongside Christian Lévêque and Didier Paugy, he was one of the editors of the two-volume work Faune des poissons d'eaux douces et saumâtres de l'Afrique de l'Ouest .

In 1993 Teugels became a member of the international scientific consortium of the online database FishBase . In the last year of his life he was President of the FishBase Consortium. In 1999 he was a part-time lecturer at the University of Leuven .

Several African freshwater fish are named after Guy Teugels, including Channallabes teugelsi , Chrysichthys teugelsi , Clariallabes teugelsi , Lamprologus teugelsi , Malapterurus teugelsi , Nanochromis teugelsi , Paramphilius teugelsi and Polypterus teugelsi .
