Gonatozygon is a species from the green algae group of ornamental algae (Desmidiales) that occursin freshwater. It consists of 12 types.

features

The representatives form unbranched threads from a row of cells, which easily disintegrate into individual cells. The cells are 4 to 20 micrometers in diameter and up to 500 micrometers long. The cells are rod-shaped and have a circular cross-section. The cells do not have a central constriction. The cell nucleus sits in the middle. You have one, two or more chloroplasts that are plate-shaped and axially positioned. Some of the chloroplasts have longitudinal ridges and several conspicuous pyrenoids . There are pores on the cell walls, the walls are often spiky and partly composed of cylindrical rings.

The asexual reproduction is performed by dichotomy. Breaking the thread or by transforming thread cells into thick-walled aplanospores. The sexual reproduction is done by the zygnematophyceae characteristic conjugation . The zygote is spherical and remains in the conjugation channel.

Occurrence

The representatives of the genus occur in the plankton of bog lakes, bog pools and ditches.
