Gonzalo Pieres
Gonzalo Pieres (Jun) (born December 17, 1982 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine professional polo player with handicap 10. At the end of 2009 he reached number 1 in the world rankings. In 2017 he was in 6th place.
Life
Gonzalo Pieres, also called Gonza or Gonzalito , is the eldest son of the polo legend Gonzalo (Sen) and his wife Cecilia Rodríguez Piola. His siblings are Facundo , also a professional polo player, Tatiana Pieres (wife of Mariano Aguerre ), Nicolas Pieres and Cecilia Pieres. He is married to Maria Rapetti and lives in Pilar ( Province of Buenos Aires ).
Pieres first played in the Argentine Open in 1999 and has competed every year since. In 2005 and 2007, his team Ellerstina was only narrowly beaten by La Dolfina , both times by a so-called golden goal in extra time. In 2008 Ellerstina defeated La Dolfina for the first time in the final of the Open when Gonzalo scored the deciding goal in extra time. The game ended 13:12.
2009 was his most successful year in sporting terms so far. In the USA he first won the CV Whitney Cup and the US Open Championship. In Great Britain he won the Gold Cup for the British Open and in Spain the Sotogrande Gold Cup. In a friendly game in Deauville on August 1, 2009 ( La Revanche - repetition of the final of the Argentine Open 2008) he managed to defeat La Dolfina again with Ellerstina. In Argentina he was successful at the Hurlingham Open and the Tortugas Open and was therefore a candidate to win the Triple Corona when Ellerstina again made it into the final of the Argentine Open . However, Ellerstina lost the final in extra time, which ended 17:16 for La Dolfina.
In addition to Ellerstina, he also plays for teams Audi, Loro Piana, Outback, Ellerston and Black Watch. Outside Argentina, he has so far won tournaments in Palm Beach (USA), Sotogrande ( Spain ), Deauville ( France ) and England.
