Facundo “Facu” Pieres (born May 19, 1986 in Buenos Aires ) is a professional Argentine polo player with a handicap of 10. He is one of the best players in the world and in 2017 was number 2 in the world rankings.

Life

Facundo Pieres was born into a family of polo players as the second son of polo legend Gonzalo Pieres Senior . His siblings are Gonzalo Pieres Junior , also a professional polo player, Tatiana Pieres, Nicolas Pieres and Cecilia Pieres. He is also the brother-in-law of Mariano Aguerre , who is married to his sister Tatiana.

His career began in 1997 when he won the Copa Potrillos in the Ellerstina Jr. Team, which was founded as a youth team for the Ellerstina Club by his father and Australian media tycoon Kerry Packer . Since then he has played in Argentina , England and the USA . His successes include wins at the Hurlingham Open , Tortugas Open and Jockey Club Open (all in Argentina) among other tournament victories. In 2008 he won the Queen's Cup in England, although he was unable to participate in the final due to an injury and was represented by his cousin Pablo Mac Donough .

In 2003 he played for the first time at the Argentine Open . In 2005 and 2007 his team Ellerstina only narrowly lost the final, both times against La Dolfina . In 2008 he won, again playing for Ellerstina, the tournament in Tortugas and for the first time the Argentine Open. In an exciting match, which was only decided in extra time, Ellerstina defeated team La Dolfina 13-12.

2009 was his most successful year to date. In the USA he won the CV Whitney Cup and the US Open Championship with his brother Gonzalo. In Great Britain he won the Gold Cup for the British Open and in August in Deauville the Deauville Gold Cup and the friendly against La Dolfina ( La Revanche ). In Argentina he won the Tortugas Open and the Hurlingham Open with Ellerstina, but lost the final of the Argentine Open in extra time 16:17 against La Dolfina.

At the age of 19 he was upgraded to Handicap 10, replacing Adolfo Cambiaso , who was 2 months older than Facundo at the time, as the youngest 10 goaler.

Pieres has been married to Agustina Wernicke since April 26, 2014.
