Tortugas Country Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tortugas Country Club is a club for polo , golf , tennis and other sports in about 50 kilometers from Buenos Aires remote Partido Pilar . It was founded on August 22, 1930.

history

The first polo field of today's Tortugas Country Club was built by Antonio Maura on the property of his father-in-law Wenceslao Escalante so that he could play polo with his friends. Due to the slow playing style, Maura's wife suggested the name "Tortugas" (in German: turtles) for the team, which was later adopted for the club. Maura was then also the first president of the club and held the office until December 16, 1964. The current president (as of November 2009) is Francisco Dorignac, the former president of the AAP .

Over the years the club has expanded to include other sports, including golf, tennis, soccer, paleta and show jumping.

Campeonato Abierto del Tortugas

The importance of the club today lies in the organization of the Open Championship of Tortugas (English: Tortugas Open), also known as the Copa Emilio de Anchorena after the original donor of the cup . The polo tournament is the first of the three major Argentine tournaments in calendar terms (the others are the Hurlingham Open and the Argentine Open ).

All three tournaments are part of the master series. The winning team in the Tortugas Open receives 100 points for the annual ranking. The tournament takes place annually from the end of September to the beginning of October. The number of participants is limited to six teams, whereby the team handicap must be between 28 and 40. Seven game sections are played.

Argentine polo triple corona consists of the Tortugas Open , the Hurlingham Open in November and the Argentine Open in December.
