Ellerstina polo team

The Ellerstina Polo Team was founded by Gonzalo Pieres sen. and the Australian Kerry Packer to play polo in Argentina.

In 1992 the team started at the three major Argentine tournaments, the Tortugas Open , the Hurlingham Open and the Argentine Open .

In 1994 the team, consisting of Pieres, Adolfo Cambiaso , Mariano Aguerre and Carlos Gracida, won the Triple Corona , i.e. that is, they won all three of the above tournaments in one year. So far, only four teams in the history of Argentine polo have achieved this. In 1997 and 1998 Ellerstina again won the Argentine Open.

In 2001 Cambiaso left the team to play with his own team ( La Dolfina ). The team was then formed from Pieres' two eldest sons ( Gonzalo and Facundo ) and their cousins Pablo Mac Donough and Matias Mac Donough.

In 2005 and 2007, the new team was narrowly defeated by rival La Dolfina in the final of the Argentine Open.

In 2008 Matias Mac Donough left the team and was replaced by Juan Martin Nero . In this line-up Ellerstina met La Dolfina again in the final, which this time Ellerstina won 13-12 in extra time. Nero was then upgraded to handicap 10, making the team currently the second (next to La Dolfina) to have a “perfect” handicap of 40.

2009 was initially a very successful year for Ellerstina. The team first won the Tortugas Open and the Hurlingham Open and was again contenders for the Triple Corona after 2005 . Even the final of the Argentine Open was reached despite a lost preliminary round game, here Ellerstina met La Dolfina as in 2008. The final was only decided in extra time, La Dolfina won 17-16 and destroyed Ellerstina's dreams of the Triple Corona .

2010 was a very successful year for Ellerstina. The team won the Argentine Open with a narrow but convincing win against La Dolfina. Since Ellerstina had already won the Tortugas Open and the Hurlingham Open , Ellerstina was the first team in a long time to secure the Triple Corona again .

In 2016, 2017 and 2018 the team won the Tortugas Open .
