action

The twin brothers Helmut and Joachim Meier have been running a nursery in Borschemich for three decades . The place is located in the Garzweiler II opencast mine and is deserted up to 50 people. The Meiers and their nursery are still on site, but they too will soon have to give way. In order to preserve the place for posterity, they are planning a 1:87 scale replica of Borschemich for their large model railway layout.

Reviews

“In filmmaking you are not given anything for free, it is sometimes said, but that's not really true. Sometimes you get moments, insights, and a special art in filmmaking in general and editing in particular is recognizing gifts, opening them and accepting them. One such gift is the special passion of the protagonist of the film 'Good Soil', the building of a railway model. The disappointed longings caused by the decline of a real (environmental) world through lignite mining are magically mirrored in the film in an idealized, ideal world of model making, and how editor Pablo Ben-Yakov succeeds in relating these unequal worlds belongs to the most wonderful and touching moments in this year's competition. The very successful and original handling of the relationship between image and language and the sure feeling for the strong documentary moment also contribute to the intense melancholy atmosphere of the film and turn it into a gift for the viewer. “The documentary 'Good Soil' has a topical topic from the region, and the fate of the twins / gardeners is very moving. And the tragedy becomes clear when the excavator is at the door. "

“Even in eight minutes you can present an exceptional situation in a complex and atmospheric way. Sebastian Lemke succeeds in this in his film about the town of Borschemich, which will soon be demolished in the Garzweiler II coal mining area. Lemke consistently limits himself to his two protagonists Helmut and Joachim Meier and their living space. It shows how the two of them continue to do their gardening without hesitation, how they roam the now almost completely deserted village and witness the slow decline. This is also so impressive because the protagonist himself describes his situation as the narrator, whereby a lot of his view of things is conveyed through the tone of voice and the choice of words. Lemke and his cameraman Benjamin Leers have succeeded in creating pictures that are saturated with an elegiac end-time mood. The streets are empty, the windows and doors boarded up, the place has almost gone under. As a contrast, the ideal world of the brothers' giant model railroad is shown, which on another level has an equally apocalyptic effect. With such image inventions Sebastian Lemke proves that he has a good feeling for how places on the canvas can convey moods. 'Good Soil' is a sadly beautiful swan song that convinces on all cinematic levels. That is why it is given the title 'particularly valuable'. "
