Google Health (German: Google Gesundheit ) was a platform on which electronic health records could be stored. Google Health has been in development since 2006 and underwent a two-month test run at a private clinic operator before officially launching in May 2008.

In June 2011, Google announced the discontinuation of January 1, 2012 (until January 1, 2013 users could still delete or download their data).

criticism

Access to the data is only possible with a password and user name, which, however, would not be sufficient for sensitive patient data. Google Health is not subject to strict German health data protection laws, and since Google is neither a healthcare provider nor an insurance company, the service is not regulated by the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It was also criticized that a private company collects and stores very sensitive data online from its users.

Boston Children's Hospital IT chief Isaac Kohane said, “If there is no legal protection, there is always a risk that data will be used in ways that are not in the best interests of the patient. There is a lot of money involved ”. Pam Dixon of the World Privacy Forum criticized: “The doctor has sworn a Hippocratic oath and must act in their (the patient's) interests. A listed company thinks first of all of its shareholders ”. Hartwig Meyer, Chairman of the Association for Patient Protection , considers the collection of data on illnesses on the Internet to be dangerous: "If there is such a central collection about patients, it could arouse desires, for example among employers and health insurance companies".

The federal data protection Peter Schaar warned of Google Health and similar services as a misuse of the data would be virtually impossible to prevent. The German Medical Association warns that the patient data could continue to be used commercially.

Functions

The data exchange only worked with English-speaking health care providers. Users were able to file information about their general health, allergies , laboratory results and current medications on Google Health to make them available for possible emergencies or doctor visits. The platform used this information to develop a health profile of the user and to compile information about possible intolerances and risks.

Other functions were:

  • Central storage of personal medical data
  • Review of drug interactions.
  • Acquisition of doctor's letters and findings from hospitals and general practitioners.
  • Search function for doctors and hospitals .

Initially, the user's medical information was not used to place personal advertisements. It was planned, however, that external service providers should be given access to certain data records for a fee.
