Gordon Cherry

Gordon Emanuel Cherry (born February 6, 1931 in Barnsley , † January 11, 1996 in Hampton-in-Arden , West Midlands ) was a British academic who researched urban planning . His research focus was on the history of urban planning. Cherry is considered one of the leading figures in scientific research on urban planning.

Life

Cherry studied geography at Queen Mary College , London , where he graduated in 1953. After his National Service , he worked in local government and worked in the urban planning departments of Durham , Kingston upon Hull , Doncaster and Sheffield and Newcastle upon Tyne , among others . During his time as Research Officer in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Planning Department from 1963 to 1968, he worked for Wilfred Burns and Kenneth Galley. Research results obtained during this time led to his first book publication in 1970, Town Planning in its Social Context .

In 1968 he began teaching at the University of Birmingham , where he became Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Center of Urban and Regional Studies . In 1976 he was appointed Professor of Urban and Regional Studies . In 1991 he retired . He was also Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science from 1981 to 1986 and Head of the School of Geography and Public Orator of the university from 1987 to 1991 .

In the 1970s he was a founding member and chairman of the Planning History Group , which later became the International Planning History Society under his leadership . He also founded the journal Planning Perspectives with Anthony Sutcliffe and was the publisher with him from 1986 until his death in 1996. From 1978 to 1979 he was President of the Royal Town Planning Institute . In 1991 he became a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Research in the Humanities .

Cherry had been married since 1957. The marriage resulted in three children, a son and two daughters.
