Anthony Sutcliffe

Anthony Richard Sutcliffe (born September 28, 1942 in London , † December 5, 2011 ) was a British historian whose research focus was on urban history .

Life

Anthony Sutcliffe attended Chigwell School in Essex . He later studied at Merton College of the University of Oxford . After graduating there, he immediately continued his studies at the Sorbonne and worked on his doctorate there .

In 1966 he became a research fellow at the University of Birmingham and worked at the University's Center for Urban and Regional Studies . In 1970 he moved to the University of Sheffield . In 1975 he became a reader . In 1982 he was appointed professor . From 1988 he taught as the successor to Harold James Dyos at the University of Leicester . Due to health problems, Sutcliffe gave up teaching at the University of Leicester in 1997.

In the 1970s he supported Gordon Cherry in setting up the Planning History group . He later co-founded the resulting International Planning History Society alongside Cherry . He also founded the journal Planning Perspectives together with Cherry and was its publisher with him from 1986 to 1996. After Cherry's death, he was the sole editor of the journal from 1996 to 2001.

Sutcliffe was divorced. This marriage resulted in two children, a daughter and a son.
