Gordon Rupp

Ernest Gordon Rupp (born January 7, 1910 in London , † December 19, 1986 in Cambridge ) was a British church historian and Methodist clergyman. His specialty was the Reformation . From 1968 to 1977 he was Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastlical History at the University of Cambridge . In 1969 he was President of the Annual Conference of the Methodist Church of Great Britain .

Life

After studying - with a semester abroad in Tübingen - Rupp became a Methodist pastor in Chislehurst . In 1938 he married Marjorie Hibbard. They had a son, Martin.

In 1945 Rupp became known when he defended Martin Luther against the statement, popularized by Peter F. Wiener, of a direct line from Luther to Hitler . In the same year he traveled to Germany with Bishop Bell and attended the Stuttgart declaration of guilt . In 1953 his Luther book The Righteousness of God was published .

Rupp worked from 1947 as a tutor in Richmond and from 1952 as an assistant professor at the Wesley House Methodist seminar in Cambridge . In 1956 he became professor of church history at the University of Manchester . He was a Methodist observer at the Second Vatican Council . In 1967 he returned to Wesley House as principal . In addition, he worked from 1968 until his retirement as a professor of church history at the University of Cambridge . The following year he also served as President of the Methodist Conference .

In 1976 he was instrumental in an attempted reunification with the Anglican Church , which failed due to Anglo-Catholic resistance from the Anglicans.

Memberships and honors

Rupp became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1970 . Various universities, etc. a. those in Manchester, Cambridge, Aberdeen and Paris awarded him honorary doctorates.
