Gorippus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flavius Cresconius Gorippus (formerly Corippus , Germanized Goripp ; * around 500, † around 570) was a late antique Latin poet. He is often considered the last important Latin poet of antiquity .

The name Gorippus, which appears in late antique graffiti of the city of Dura Europos , is attested three times in the manuscript Matritensis 10029 (the only manuscript in which his work In laudem Iustini Augusti Minoris is preserved), while the spelling with C appears only once. According to the report by Johannes Cuspinian, a lost manuscript from Goripp's epic Iohannis contained the name form Fl. (Flavius) Cresconius Gorippus . The spelling with C spread through the first edition of the Laus by Ruyz Azagra, who used the form Corippus in 1581 without giving a reason. It is only since 2010 that this view has slowly gained acceptance; In many publications, however, the form of the name Corippus can still be found .

Little is known about Goripp's life, but two of his works have survived that identify him as probably the last great Latin poet of antiquity . Goripp, who (like Fulgentius and Luxorius ) came from North Africa, received his well-founded rhetorical and literary training during the time when the area around Carthage was ruled by the Vandals . In 533 the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian sent an army to recapture the province of Africa ; but the area remained restless for years until it was finally pacified in 548 by the imperial army master Johannes Troglita . It is this general to whom Goripp dedicated his great Virgil- oriented epic Iohannis around 550 . In eight books, it mainly describes the struggles of the Romans against the Moors and was only rediscovered in 1820. Goripp by no means achieved the genius of his role model, but the epic shows what remarkable artistic achievements even the late late antiquity was still capable of. The Iohannis is also of value as a historical source , whereby Goripp possibly consciously referred to his contemporary, the historian Prokopios of Caesarea , who at the same time described Justinian's wars of vandal in the third and fourth books of his histories .

The second surviving work by Goripp is the eulogy In laudem Iustini Augusti Minoris in four books (the fourth book being incomplete), which is dedicated to Justinian's nephew and successor Justin II and was written between 565 and 567. It is not entirely certain whether Goripp himself was in Constantinople at the time; it is also possible due to the tradition that the work was created in Africa . Goripp was probably in economic hardship, so he tried to win the favor of the new emperor by justifying his (not undisputed) claim to the throne. This work also reflects Coripp's erudition and rhetorical talent. Above all, it provides very important information on the late Roman court ceremonies and on the life of the capital's population. It is also noteworthy that, as Goripp's example shows, high-language Latin works were written and received in the Eastern Roman Empire in the second half of the 6th century - the Graecization of the empire was progressing rapidly at that time, but was not yet complete .

After Goripp had been neglected by research for a long time, the number of studies on this long underestimated author has increased significantly in the course of the enormously increased interest in late antiquity.
