Gornaja Karussel ( Russian Горная Карусель , literally "mountain carousel"; English Gornaya Karusel ) is the name of a ski area located on the northern slopes of the Aibga ridge near Esto-Sadok , Sochi . Until 2008, the lift system and the associated slopes were known under the company name Alpika Service (А́льпика-Се́рвис).

Ski Area

From the bottom of the valley, i.e. the Esto-Sadok (540 m) which has been expanded into a hotel village, three monocable gondolas lead to the three transfer levels at 960 m, 1460 m and 2200 m.

The highest cable car station on the Aibga mountain offers a panoramic view and connects the Aibga with a mountain peak further east via two chairlifts, which open up the Circus 2 and Circus 3 slopes in the uppermost mountain area .

The Gornaja Karussel ski area, which was expanded in 2008 , was not used as a venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics , but is in the immediate vicinity of the Gazprom Mountain Resort (with Laura , the biathlon and cross-country skiing center) and the two bases for snowboarding / Freestyle or the alpine disciplines in Rosa Chutor (Роза Хутор).

The expansion of the Gornaja Karussel ski arena is directly related to the Olympic Winter Games and should be available to tourists as an internationally advertised ski area from 2014 onwards. In the summer, the mountain slope was previously used as a venue for mountain bike competitions.

history

The ski area, now also marketed exclusively under the name Gornaya Karusel in English-language texts , was built from 1993 and was known under the name of the operating company Alpika Service (А́льпика-Се́рвис). While the name Alpika Service was still used for climbing aids until the summer of 2013 , this designation has now disappeared in all official publications.

In 2008, Gazprom acquired the facilities at a very affordable price and expanded the ski area to include newly built hotel villages and ski lifts in anticipation of the large number of tourists and the expected popularity of the ski area in Krasnaya Polyana , after the closure of Alpika Service and so that their economic ruin had been achieved. At the time, the media suspected that the forced closure of the Alpika Service company for its sale to Gazprom was operated by the governor of the Krasnodar Territory, Alexander Tkachev , who is a high-ranking official in Putin's United Russia party .
