Gossypium arboreum is a plant from the genus cotton ( Gossypium ). It comes from tropical Asia and isgrownfor the production of cotton fibers.
description
Gossypium arboreum is a perennial shrub or shrub reached, a height of 2 to 3 m. The stem axis is dark red, young twigs are hairy. The leaves are three to seven lobed. The leaf lobes are lanceolate to oval. The leaf is oval to rounded in outline with a diameter of 4 to 8 cm. The petiole is 1.5 to 10 cm long, according to other information 2 to 4 cm long. The petiole and both leaf sides are hairy , especially the leaf veins. The stipules are very narrow, they soon fall off.
The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils. The flower stalks are 1.5 to 2.5 inches long and hairy. The outer cup consists of three at the base intergrown bracts . They are 2.5 cm long, hairy on the veins, with three or four not very long prongs at the front, heart-shaped at the base. The bowl-shaped goblet is indistinctly five-lobed. The petals are yellowish, they can each have a reddish spot at the base. They measure 3 to 5 cm in length. The columna is 1.5 to 2 cm long.
The pendulous capsule fruit is three-part, rarely up to five-part, oval or elongated, beaked in front. It becomes up to 3 cm long. The oval seeds are 0.5 to 0.8 cm in size. They are surrounded by long white fibers and short, relatively firmly adhering fibers.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Gossypium arboreum is native to India and Sri Lanka. It is mainly cultivated in tropical Asia and Africa.
