Gotō Jūrō

Gotō Jūrō ( Japanese 後 藤 十郎 ; born November 2, 1887 in Yamagata Prefecture , Japan ; † May 25, 1984 ) was a major general in the Imperial Japanese Army .

Life

Gotō, born in Yamagata prefecture in 1887, graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1907 at the age of 19 . From 1934 to 1935 he was commander of the Sendai regimental district and then until 1934 regimental commander of the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 15th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Division .

After the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War , Gotō was in command of the fortress on the island of Tsushima until 1938 . After a promotion to major general , he commanded the 132nd Infantry Brigade of the 104th Division . As part of the 21st Army , he fought with his division in the operations to conquer Canton and Shantou in southern China and took part in the defense of the region against the Chinese winter offensive from 1939 to 1940.

In 1940 Gotō was relocated back to Japan, where he briefly took over command of the 4th Supply Division before he was transferred to the reserve and retired that same year. However, he was recalled to the service in 1941 and took over the Yokohama regimental district until 1942. In 1945 he was then briefly commander of the regimental district and area command Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture . After the capitulation of Japan , he finally resigned from the military service.
