Gothenburg Tournament
The Gothenburg Tournament is a former international men's boxing tournament , which in the Swedish province of County of Västra Götaland lying city Gothenburg twice in total under the rules of AIBA was held. It consisted of a round of sixteen, a round of 16, a quarter-finals, a semi-final and a final.
1st tournament
The first tournament, which was held in 1990, boxed in 12 weight classes:
- Super heavyweight (over 91 kg)
- Heavy weight (up to 91 kg)
- Light heavyweight (up to 81 kg)
- Middle weight (up to 75 kg)
- Medium weight (up to 71 kg)
- Welter weight (up to 67 kg)
- Half welter weight (up to 63.5 kg)
- Lightweight (up to 60 kg)
- Feather weight (up to 57 kg)
- Bantam weight (up to 54 kg)
- Flyweight (up to 51 kg)
- Half fly weight (up to 48 kg)
Well-known winners were:
- Brian Nielsen (over 91 kg)
- Kostya Tszyu (up to 67 kg)
- Jyri Kjäll (up to 63.5 kg)
- George Cramne (up to 60 kg)
- Djamel Lifa (up to 57 kg)
- Jimmy Mayanja (up to 54 kg)
2nd tournament
The second and final tournament took place from April 20-25, 2004. This time it also served as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games , which were held in the Greek capital Athens in August of the same year . It was boxed in only 5 weight classes:
- Super heavyweight (over 91 kg)
- Middle weight (up to 75 kg)
- Half welter weight (up to 64 kg)
- Feather weight (up to 57 kg)
- Flyweight (up to 51 kg)
Four of the five tournament winners are well-known boxers:
- Kubrat Pulev (over 91 kg)
- Károly Balzsay (up to 75 kg)
- Ionuț Gheorghe (up to 64 kg)
- Viorel Simion (up to 57 kg)
