Gottfried Bombach (born March 6, 1919 in Kamenz ; † July 4, 2010 in Basel ) was a German economist who is considered one of the pioneers of mathematically-oriented economic theory .

Life

Bombach was already a particularly talented student in the natural sciences and mathematics at high school. After graduating from high school in 1937, he worked for two years in his father's trading company, followed by labor, the Wehrmacht, a war wound and a prisoner of war. Released from British captivity, he began studying economics in Kiel , as his father had intended him to take over his parents' business and refused to study science. During his studies he learned modern, mathematically oriented economic theory from Erich Schneider .

This was followed by a position at the OECD in Paris and in 1957 he was elected full professor of economics at the University of Basel .

His work on economic growth, income distribution, the economy and employment made him a pioneer in mathematical economics in German-speaking countries.

Bombach was a member of several economic expert teams in Switzerland and Germany under Ludwig Erhard .

In 1960 Gottfried Bombach took over the chairmanship of the Scientific Advisory Board of Prognos AG.

His hometown Kamenz named a street in the industrial area on Ochsenberg after him in 2016.
