Life

After graduating from high school in Timișoara in 1952, Gottfried habenicht began studying (“Folclor muzical”) in Bucharest at the “Conservatorul de muzică C. Porumbescu”, with a focus on ethnomusicology. He graduated in 1957 with the qualification " Professor of Music ". From 1957 he worked in the ethnomusicology department at the "Institutul de etnografie și folclor" in Bucharest, where he was mainly concerned with the monographic representation of folk musical instruments and the lamentations for the dead in north-east Transylvania. As "cercetător științific principal" ("main scientific researcher") he wrote a number of papers and presentations, conducted field research, worked on scientific films and created transcriptions. Due to local customs, his work was usually not published under his own name.

At the end of 1973 he moved to Germany and continued his scientific work in Freiburg im Breisgau at the "Institute for East German Folklore" (later renamed "Johannes Künzig Institute for East German Folklore"). There he played a decisive role in its development and contributed to the expansion and organization of the archives. His activities included the writing of music-ethnological treatises, field research , transcriptions and the publication of annotated editions of authentic audio documents.

In addition to guest lectures and teaching assignments, habenicht worked on several scientific commissions and their working groups, e. B. in the "International Group on Folk Musical Instruments and Study Group on Analysis and Systematization of Folk Music", at the "Institute for Scientific Film" ( Göttingen ), in the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Volkskunde" u. a. (See: “Membership in Scientific Organizations”.) A number of his essays appeared in the “Yearbook for East German Folklore”. One focus of his work was the bibliographical documentation of folklore in and from Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

In 1988, habenicht took over the deputy and executive management of the Johannes Künzig Institute. He has been in active retirement since 1997. A list of his publications, which appeared until 1994, is printed in the "Yearbook for German and Eastern European Folklore 37.1994" (pp. 337-350). In 2003 he was awarded the “Main Prize of the Danube Swabian Culture Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg” for his life's work.
