Gottfried I. (Eppstein)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried I. von Eppstein (* approx. 1169 or approx. 1160 or 1165 in Eppstein; † 1223 , buried in St. Mariengreden in Mainz) was a nobleman of the Eppstein family . The Eppsteiners, who succeeded in establishing one of the most important aristocratic rule in Hesse in the late Middle Ages and who were wealthy in Spessart, Taunus and Wetterau as early as 1200, were noble lords and in the 13th century had four archbishops and electors from Mainz .

Life

Gottfried I was the son of Gerhard I von Eppstein (previously called Gerhard II or III von Hainhausen or Hagenhausen). The mother's name is not known. It was first mentioned in 1189.

He was married to Isalda von Wied (* unknown; † unknown), a daughter of Count Dietrich I von Wied and sister of the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Theodoric II von Wied . The following children resulted from this marriage:

Via Gottfried's wife Isalda, the Eppsteiners made their first major inheritance in the first half of the 13th century with half of the county of Wied with the castles Olbrück and Altwied : the sons Gerhard II and Gottfried II agreed on a division of the inheritance, provided but sure that the possessions of both lines remained intertwined, because the castles - including Eppstein Castle, which gives it its name - were divided among the sons.
