Gottfried Jetter (* 1838 in Tuttlingen ; † 1903 in Freiburg ) was a German entrepreneur and cutler as well as the company founder of the Aesculap works .

Life

Gottfried Jetter was born in Tuttlingen in 1838 as the son of a stocking weaver. He began an apprenticeship as a cutler. At the age of 17, Jetter set off on a journey in 1855. He gained experience in Geneva , Strasbourg , Marburg , Vienna , Berlin and Paris . In 1867 he returned to his hometown. He opened a small workshop for surgical mechanics. The business grew rapidly. In 1878, 120 employees were registered. In 1887 he made his two brothers-in-law Karl Christian Scheerer and Wilhelm Scheerer partners. The company was now called Jetter & Scheerer. In 1889 a new factory building with 300 employees was moved into. In 1890, Gottfried Jetter retired from the management for health reasons. Jetter & Scheerer already has 440 employees. After the company already had branches in Berlin and New York and the factory building in Tuttlingen was too small, the new building under the Ehrenberg was built in 1899. In the same year the Aesculap brand was registered. This location is still the headquarters of Aesculap AG today and has since been enormously enlarged. Gottfried Jetter experienced the rise of his company to a global company. He died in Freiburg in 1903 and was buried in the city cemetery, where his grave still stands today.

meaning

Especially in Tuttlingen, Gottfried Jetter is considered an industrial pioneer and the father of surgical mechanics. This is of great importance for the Tuttlingen location, as over 450 companies in this sector are now based here. B Braun cites the rapid introduction of series production as the secret of its success . In 1870, Jetter founded an aid fund for his employees. This tradition is continued today by the BKK Aesculap, which can typically be found in Jetterstraße.
