Gottfried Porstendorfer

Walter Gottfried Porstendorfer (born November 23, 1929 in Chemnitz ; † November 5, 2001 in Freiberg ) was a German geophysicist and university professor.

Life

Gottfried Porstendorfer passed his matriculation examination in Chemnitz in 1948. He then worked as a mine worker in Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. and completed internships at the Geophysical Observatory Collm and the Geomagnetic Observatory in Niemegk . In 1949 he joined the National Democratic Party of Germany . In 1951 he ended his membership, but rejoined this party in 1963.

From 1949 he studied geophysics , first at the University of Leipzig and from 1951 at the Bergakademie Freiberg , where he obtained his diploma in 1954. He then worked as the head of a seismic survey team at VEB Geophysik in Mecklenburg. In September 1956 he accepted a position as a scientific assistant with Otto Meißer at the Institute for Applied Geophysics of the Bergakademie Freiberg. In 1960 he was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. in the same year he continued his research on magnetotellurics at the Freiberg Laboratory for Practical Geophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1964 he received his habilitation.

In 1965 Gottfried Porstendorfer became a part-time lecturer in applied geophysics at the Bergakademie. On September 1, 1966, he was appointed professor with a teaching assignment, and in 1969 he became a full professor of applied geophysics. From 1968 to 1975 he was Deputy Director for Research at the Geosciences Section and from 1981 to 1984 he was Deputy Section Director for Education, Training and Further Education. On June 1, 1990 he retired prematurely for health reasons. He died in Freiberg in 2001. His grave is in the Donatsfriedhof .
