Gottfried Reyger

Gottfried Reyger (born November 4, 1704 in Danzig ; † October 29, 1788 there ) was a German botanist and naturalist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Reyger ".

Reyger came from a wealthy merchant family in Gdansk (his uncle was mayor) and studied at the Academic Gymnasium Gdansk and law at the University of Halle. This was followed by a tour of Europe (the Netherlands, England, France), as was customary for students from wealthy circles at the time. In Danzig he devoted himself to scientific studies after 1734. In 1743 he was a co-founder of the Natural Research Society in Danzig .

In 1764 and 1766 he published a flora of the area around Danzig according to the system of Carl von Linné , first in Latin and in 1768 in German. Since he also took over some observations from his predecessors ( Nikolaus Oelhafen , Jakob Breyne ), errors crept in. Pastor Johann Reinhold Forster and his son Georg Forster also worked on the work . In total, he listed around 630 species.

He also dealt with meteorology (he left continuous weather observations from 1721 to 1786), zoology (ornithology) and astronomy.

From 1780 he laid out a botanical garden on his property, today's Park Oruński (formerly Hoenepark ).
