The Park Oruński ( Hoenepark , translated: Park of Ohra ) is a park in Gdańsk in Poland . Today it is in the Orunia-Św district. Wojciech-Lipce and, with an area of 19 hectares, is one of the largest and most beautiful parks in the city. Until it was incorporated in 1933, Ohra (Orunia) was an independent rural community in the Danziger Höhe district .

history

In the 16th century there were mansions of Gdańsk patrician families near Ohra. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the mansion came into the hands of the mayor Bartholomäus Schachmann . He was the first to create a park with ponds and watercourses here. From 1685 to 1779 the estate was owned by the Groddeck family . King August the Strong was their guest in 1698.

During the Russian siege of Danzig in 1734 Russian Field Marshal Münnich set up his headquarters here, it is the place where the Danzig surrender was probably signed.

The botanist Gottfried Reyger transformed the park into a botanical garden from 1780 to 1788 . The complex was destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars in 1813. Since then, a hill has been called the Mountain of Tears ( Góra Łez ).

The park was then restored as the summer residence of the Hoene merchant family from Gdańsk. In 1918 Emiie Hoene bequeathed it to the municipality, through which it came into the possession of the city of Danzig in 1933.

The park is the seat of the National Center for the Culture of Polish Tatars ( Narodowe Centrum Kultury Tatarów Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej im. Leona Mirzy Kryczyńskiego ). The facility wants to remember the more than 600 years of history and culture of the Polish Tatars , and it also includes a small mosque. In 2010, the Polish President Komorowski inaugurated a Tatar monument.
