Gottfried Seebaß (theologian)

Gottfried Seebaß (born June 2, 1937 in Braunschweig ; † September 7, 2008 ) was a German church historian and from 1978 to 2002 professor of Reformation history at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . From 1996 to 2000 he was President of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Life

Gottfried Seebaß was the son of the Lutheran pastor Georg Seebaß (1899–1970) and his wife Hedwig Schräpel. He grew up in Braunschweig. After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology , first at the University of Hamburg , then at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen and at the Georg August University in Göttingen . Seebass received his doctorate in Erlangen in 1967 and completed his habilitation in 1972.

The main focus of his research was the history of the Reformation. He was an outstanding expert on the history of the reformer Andreas Osiander and the Anabaptist leader Hans Hut . He worked as (co) editor of the complete works of the Strasbourg reformer Martin Bucer , the Martini Buceri opera omnia , the works of Osiander and the letters and writings of Upper German Anabaptists.

Seebass was also one of the co-editors of the Theological Real Encyclopedia and the sources on the history of the Anabaptists .

In 2007 Seebaß was awarded the Great University Medal of Heidelberg University.
