Gottlieb Theodor Becker

Gottlieb Theodor Becker (born July 31, 1812 in Aschersleben , † June 21, 1869 in Wittenberg ) was a German educator.

Life

The son of a master cloth maker, attended high school in Eisleben from 1823 to 1831 . Then he moved to the University of Halle-Wittenberg , where he devoted himself to studying philology and philosophy. There he heard philological lectures with Gottfried Bernhardy , Moritz Hermann Eduard Meier and Friedrich Ritschl , historical and old German with Heinrich Leo , philosophical with Hermann Friedrich Wilhelm Hinrichs and Julius Schaller (1810–1868), exegesis of the Old and New Testaments with August Tholuck and Wilhelm Gesenius , as well as scientific and mathematical lectures.

After he had won a prize in 1835 with the work de proverbiis Graecorum , he began his teacher rehearsal year at the Latin secondary school in Halle in 1836. After completing the same, he was employed there as an assistant teacher, at Easter 1838 adjunct and in 1839 as a collaborator, in which position he also became educator at the orphanage for the department of high school students.

In 1840 he received his doctorate in philosophy with the thesis De ideis Platonis and in 1844 he moved to the Lyceum in Wittenberg as a teacher of German and history. Here he had also taught the upper classes in gymnastics.

At Easter 1868 he fell ill, so that he had to take leave of absence from his employment. He was retired after a year and died a few months later.
