Gottlob Christian Crusius (born July 14, 1785 in Lichtenstein ; † May 12, 1848 in Hanover ) was a German philologist, educator and author.

Life

The son of the school teacher and cantor Gottlob Leberecht Crusius attended the grammar school in Zwickau in 1801 and the University of Wittenberg in 1806 to study theology and philology. His studies were interrupted by the Wars of Liberation , but continued at the Wittenberg University from 1807 to Whitsun 1809. He then became a private tutor in Klieken near Dessau and in 1810 moved to the University of Halle , where he became a member of the educational seminar.

In June 1812 he took up a position as the third teacher and cantor at the Lyceum in Osterode . In 1816 he followed a call to Hanover as a cantor at the Lyceum there , where he also gave lessons in the ancient languages. Appointed sub-rector in 1826 , he soon had to resign from his position as cantor due to illness and from then on only worked as a philological teacher until 1843, when he was relieved of his official duties with the title of “rector” due to a breast condition.

As a writer, Crusius made a name that was widely known through a large number of school editions and dictionaries on ancient writers. His most important achievement is the dictionary of Homeric poems, which has been published in repeated editions and which was revised by Ernst Eduard Seiler and Carl Capelle after his death . The last, 9th edition (1889) was last reprinted in 1968. With Georg Aenotheus Koch , Crusius also published a dictionary of Xenophon's memorabilia , which is still in use today (edited by Otto Güthling ).

Gottlob Christian Crusius married Dorothee Henriette Louise Becker on July 18, 1815, with whom he had six children: Gottlob Ernst August Hermann (1816–1819), Mathilde (1818–1875), Louise Ernestine Agnes (1820–1821), Emilie (1821 –1907), Theodore (1824–1909) and Elisabeth (1837–?). His family list is contained in the family list of his great, great, great, grandfather Balthasar Crusius .
