Georg Aenotheus Koch

Georg Aenotheus Koch (born November 15, 1802 in Drebach ; † July 9, 1879 in Leipzig ) was a German classical philologist , lexicographer and educator .

Life

Koch, son of the Protestant pastor Johann Georg Gottfried Koch (1754–1822) from Drebach in the Ore Mountains, was initially taught by his father. He then attended the Lyceum in Chemnitz and from 1823 studied Protestant theology and classical philology with Gottfried Hermann and Christian Daniel Beck at the University of Leipzig . In 1825 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. He worked as a writer and from 1831 as a teacher (later appointed professor ) at the Thomas School in Leipzig . From 1862 to 1867 he was vice rector .

In addition to numerous editions of the classics, he mainly devoted himself to the lexicography of individual authors ( Horace , Cornelius Nepos , Velleius Paterculus , Virgil ) and work on major projects such as the Gradus ad Parnassum , the German-Latin comparative dictionary of old, middle and new geography (Leipzig 1835) and the Latin-German concise dictionary , the first three editions of which (Philipp Reclam, Leipzig 1854–65) he experienced.

His endeavor was to supply the schools of the Hellenistic kingdom with books. For this he was awarded the Golden Knight's Cross of the Order of Savior by King Otto of Greece .
