The Gould cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx poecilurus ), incorrectly also Chrysococcyx russatus ( Gould 1886), is a species of cuckoo that is widespread in the Oriental and Australis . There are five subspecies .

features

The Gould's cuckoo is about 15-17 cm tall. There is no such thing as gender dimorphism . The plumage of the nominate form is shiny brown-green on top and shimmers orange to purple in the sunlight. The head plumage as well as the chest and flanks are white with brown sparrows . The male's iris is reddish-brown, while the female's is brown. The female also has a pale green to yellowish eye ring. The subspecies differ in the different degrees of the over-eye stripe , as well as the sparrowing.

distribution

Due to the frequency of the species and the large distribution area, the Gould's cuckoo is not considered endangered by the IUCN .

Way of life

Preferred habitats of the Gould cuckoo are tropical rainforests , monsoon forests , alluvial forests and mangroves , as well as lighter secondary forests and plantations. The main host birds are honey-eaters and gerygons . The diet consists of insects such as caterpillars , beetles and plant wasp larvae .

Systematics

The system of the Gould cuckoo is controversial. Due to the similar appearance and the similar song as well as the probable hybridization in some breeding areas in Australia, the Gould's cuckoo is seen by some authors as a subspecies of the small bronze cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx minutillus poecilurus ). Both species are sometimes listed under the name Chalcites minutillus . The species were brought together under the name Chrysococcyx malayanus ( Raffles 1822), which, however, goes back to an incorrect determination and assignment of a female of the amethyst cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx xanthorhynchus ).
