The Governor Oliver Ames Estate is a 36  acres (14.57  hectares ) large nature reserve and cultural monument in Easton in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is named after the former Governor of the state, Oliver Ames , named and used by the organization The Trustees of Reservations managed.

history

The influences of the Ames family can still be felt in Easton and the surrounding area; in addition to the Oakes Ames Memorial Hall designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and registered in the NRHP , the library and the local high school are named after her. The Victorian buildings and rock gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted . After the death of Ames and his wife in the early 20th century, his children left the property, which then became increasingly dilapidated. The family villa was later demolished.

The trustees were able to acquire part of the site in 2012 with the support of the city administration, private donors and a state funding program and designate it as a protected area.

Protected area

The site is located close to the North Easton National Historic District about 30  mi (48,3  km ) from Boston removed. Ames, whose family grew financially rich in the 19th century with a manufacture of shovels , acquired the property and designed it over time as it is largely preserved today. The trees, which are more than 100 years old today, are characteristic of the area, as are wide areas of grass and some ponds.

The former property covers a significantly larger area than the Trustees' reserve, which is why some areas are marked as private property and are not open to the public. The reserve itself is open during the day and accessible free of charge.
