The ancestors of Govert van Achtens probably came from Noord-Brabant and perhaps emigrated to Schleswig-Holstein because of their faith. Probably a brother or the father of van Achtens was Marten vanuchten , who worked as a painter between 1588 and 1610. Govert vanhaben lived in Tönning . He was married to Margreta (Grete), whose maiden name is not documented, and with whom he had at least one son. His life is documented due to guilt trials. A first entry in the “Tönninger Civil Klagebuch” from 1593 shows that he owed a promised painting for the church. In 1596 he created several portraits of princes for the Gottorfer Hof . These were probably copies, but this has not been secured. Together with Marten vanhaben he also delivered flags for trumpeters and the army. In 1602 and 1604 he received money for many pictures of the choir of the Gothic church in Husum, which was demolished in 1807 . In 1609, with the help of a son, he designed a grand piano for the organ of the Nikolaikirche in Flensburg . He also created an altar in Katharinenheerd and several epitaphs , including the Peträus epitaph in the church of Schwabstedt .

Van Achtern worked in the style of late mannerism . His style and way of working show that he was completely dependent on Martens van Achtern and mostly worked of inferior quality than him. He drew more coarsely than his relative, used darker colors and combined them with each other in a somewhat more painterly manner. He preferred to use white and gray rather than yellow shades.
