Marten van Achten's ancestors probably came from Noord-Brabant and perhaps emigrated to Schleswig-Holstein because of their beliefs. Probably a brother or the son of van Achtens was Govert van Achtens . A “Marten Mahler” can be found in the Gottorf customs register in 1584, who could have been Marten van eighth. Theodor Riewerts saw a close stylistic connection between van Achtens and Hans von Coninxloo . He therefore assumed that both had studied together in Antwerp . They later parted ways, even if they stayed in contact for life. Like van Conningsloo, Vanhaben could therefore have been born around 1540.

Marten vanhaben is first documented safely as court painter to the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf in 1590 . Before that, he must have worked in Eiderstedt . In 1590/91 he created the pictures of the gallery of the chapel of Gottorf Castle together with two journeymen . In 1592 he designed a portrait showing Duke Adolf I in full armor. What later happened to this picture is not documented. In 1596 he created flags for the army with Govert van eighth.

Around 1600 van Acht lived again in Tönning and designed altars and epitaphs in the vicinity . The only still known work with Signature is the altar of St. Christian Church he created, created 1596. 1604 the wing pictures of the altar of the Marienkirche in Husum , which today in the St. Jacob's Church in Schwabstedt find are. The last work that can be safely assigned to him is an epitaph for Poppens from 1610 in Oldenswort .

In 1611 Govert vanhaben lived with his mother. If Govert was a son of Martens, he died in 1610.

style

Van Acht was one of the painters who introduced the style of international mannerism in Schleswig-Holstein . He always copied graphic templates and mostly used the latest copper engravings by Hans von Aachen . There were also works by Glotzius, Maerten de Vos , Frans Floris , Maarten van Heemskerck , Blocklandt and Bartholomäus Spranger . He strictly copied the templates, which made his pictures appear more graphically than painterly. In order to achieve a long-distance effect, he kept the interior drawings simpler.

Van Acht worked with strong contrasts of light and dark colors and used cool and broken hues. With stage-like design areas, he often ended them with a backdrop-like landscape. He designed the interiors gray and brown-gray, the robes with different shades of red and additional nuances of red color. He often used light yellows, but never blue. In the later phase of his work, for example at the altar of Garding and later works, he worked with a little nuanced coloring. Shadows that he had previously made appear black, he now colored; for the incarnate he chose slight gradations.
