Marten de Vos was probably trained as a painter by his Leiden father Peeter de Vos and Frans Floris . After completing his apprenticeship, he went on a study trip to Rome , Florence and Venice . His main interest was the Italian painter Jacopo Tintoretto , where he painted the landscape backgrounds in some of his pictures.

After de Vos returned from Italy in 1558, he became master of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp . The merchant and shipowner, Gillis Hooftman financed the equipment of his studio and commissioned several paintings. By 1560 at the latest, de Vos married Joanna de Boucq, with whom he had sons Daniel (1568–1605) and Marten (1576–1613), who were also active as painters and of whom the younger Marten was also named as a master from 1607 .

De Vos 'first commissioned works were altarpieces , allegories and saints' lives. Some of his works can still be found in various Belgian churches. The museum in Antwerp houses 30 of his paintings, including the triptych The Triumph of Christ and his last documented work from 1602, Luke painting the Madonna , whose side wings were completed by Otto van Veen and Martin Pepyn (1575–1643). Further history paintings by de Vos can be found in the museums of Seville , Ghent and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna . His portraits are also important, including the portrait of Alessandro Farnese from 1581 .

In his workshop he trained eleven apprentices between 1564 and 1600, including Wenzel Coebergher (1560–1634). In the Guild of St. Luke he was promoted to subdean in 1571 and dean in 1572/78. Together with Ambrosius Francken (1544-1618) de Vos took over a large part of the decoration of the city of Antwerp in 1594 for the reception of Archduke Ernst of Austria ; Johannes Bochius was in charge of overall management .

style

Marten de Vos developed an individual mix of traditional Flemish iconography with Italian features. His figures are less stylized than those of his teacher Frans Floris. The Disegno of de Vos is very clear, nevertheless, both his human ideal and his use of color clear influence of the Venetians Titian and Tintoretto, in a singular blend with Nordic features, sometimes on Rubens points forward.

His early work is characterized by fresh, warm and bright colors. The following period up to around 1574 shows a cooler, lighter and more colorful color scheme. Later his coloring became more harmonious and softer in the modeling. There is a noticeable preference for compositions rich in figures, with the characters taking up a large part of the picture area.

His oeuvre mainly includes depictions of religious subjects, but also mythological and allegorical works and portraits. He painted many of his pictures in oil on wood. In addition to his paintings, he created numerous engravings. Marten de Vos was one of the most important Flemish painters of the second half of the 16th century and represents a northern form of Mannerism. His influence on the younger generation of artists in Antwerp - including Peter Paul Rubens - was not without significance.

reception

After his death, many of his drawings served as templates for copper engravings . On January 24, 2002, his altar wings with the depictions of John the Baptist , St. John the Evangelist and the motifs on the reverse: St. Catherine and St. Lawrence were auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York. He depicted the individual figures of saints in the foreground of a landscape.
