The prehistoric burial ground of Högom is the largest burial ground in the historic Norrland province in Sweden . It is located in the suburbs about 2 km west of Sundsvall city center .

Large hills with a diameter of more than 30.0 meters are often called Kungshögen in Sweden ( German  "Königshügel" - Sättuna Kungshög ; Kungshögen Högsäter and Nysäter; Kungshögen Höllviken and the Kungshögarna of Malmö-Oxie ). They are mainly found around the Mälaren , some examples can also be found in other landscapes. The large mounds often date from the younger Iron Age . Some of the largest are: Anundshög in Västmanland , Grönehög in Bohuslän , Inglinge Hög in Småland , Kung Ranes Hög in Västergötland , Ledbergs kulle in Östergötland , Randens Hög in Halland , Ottarshögen in Uppland , Skalunda Hög in Västergötland and the three Västmanland Hög Hills in Old Uppsala in Uppland. The Högom burial ground consisted of at least 16 burial mounds , five of which have already been destroyed and seven others are relatively small. It was created between 400 and 550 AD.

Of the four great barrows that were not destroyed, three had already been looted over time. In the fourth, however, the intact burial place of a high-ranking personality ( storman ), the so-called "Chief of Högom" was found. The dead lay in a five by two meter chamber in the middle of the hill. This chamber was built from beams and covered with boulders. The dead man was buried in a wooden coffin. Numerous grave goods were found in the chamber, including sword, shield, lance and other weapons. A harness, tools, vessels and pieces of jewelry made of ceramic and glass also accompanied the chief on his journey through the dead.

A rune stone still exists on the Högom burial ground , which was erected around the year 1000 and whose inscription contains one of the dedications typical of that time. Traces of houses have also been discovered under some hills.
