geography
Graefenhain is a forest hoof village at an altitude of 450 to 500 meters at the foot of the Thuringian Forest . The surrounding mountain ranges are sometimes over 700 meters high.
history
In old writings, Graefenhain is also called "Graefenhagin" or "Graefenhahn" (hence the rooster in the coat of arms). The place arose in the 11th or 12th century as a clearing settlement. The place was mentioned for the first time in 1230 on the occasion of the sale for 60 Marks of silver and a horse of a share owned by Count Ernst and Heinrich von Gleichen to the Georgenthal Monastery . The inhabitants were once mostly active in forestry, later also in the manufacture of ceramics and dolls. After the dissolution of the Georgenthal monastery, the place belonged to the Georgenthal office from 1531 , which had belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha since 1640 .
In 1869 the Halbig porcelain factory was established, which for a long time was the largest local employer with 200 jobs. Several major fires occurred in the 19th century.
On January 1, 2019, the independent municipality of Graefenhain was incorporated into the city of Ohrdruf . Earlier, Ohrdruf was already a fulfilling community for Graefenhain.

The Halbigsturm and "The Villa", two of Halbig's places of residence, Karl-Halbig-Strasse and the doll factory he founded especially characterize the townscape.
- The composer and organist Hieronymus Florentinus Quehl also worked in Graefenhain.
