It can be compared with the term urban district or the Swiss quarter .

Grätzl usually have one or more highly frequented, prominent points of contact, for example a marketplace, a bank branch or a supermarket.

As of August 1, 2016, this “police unit” was deployed on a trial basis in the Vienna districts of Meidling , Hietzing , Ottakring , Hernals , Währing , Döbling , Donaustadt and Liesing . In 2017, the mission was extended to all of Vienna. The unit includes around 100 police officers. They dedicate themselves entirely to work as Grätzl police officers, where they know their way around particularly well. The unit is managed and coordinated by 23 security coordinators, each responsible for a city district . According to the Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl, the main task is to increase the subjective feeling of security.

The main point of criticism is the fear that the Grätzlpolizei will seduce you into denouncing and tie in with block guardianship .
