The Grøtsund ( Norwegian Grøtsundet ) is a sound in the Fylke (province) Troms og Finnmark in North-Norge , Norway . Almost all of it is located in the territory of the municipality of Tromsø and only a very small part of that of the neighboring municipality of Karlsøy to the north .
The approximately 33 km long and 4-5 km wide strait through which the northern shipping access to Tromsø runs, separates the islands of Reinøy and Ringvassøy in the northwest and the northern part of the island of Kvaløy in the west from the mainland of the Scandinavian peninsula in the southeast.
The Grøtsund begins in the southwest on the northern tip of the island of Tromsøy , on which the city center of Tromsø is and where it merges into the Tromsøysund in the east of the island and the Sandnessund in the west. From there, it initially runs about 8 km north to the confluence of the Kvalsund, which runs between Kvaløy and Ringvassøy and comes from the northwest . Then he turns to the south of the southern tip of Ringvassøy northeast around and extends approximately 25 km to the beacon Grotnes on the southeastern tip of the island Reinøy, where he in the North Sea leading Ullsfjord opens. Halfway through it, it passes the 1 km long island of Nipøy, located off the southern tip of Reinøy, the only island of any significant size in Grøtsund, and the confluence of Langsund, which comes from the northeast and separates the islands of Ringvassøy and Reinøy.
