Gračanica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Грачаница , Albanian  Graçanica or Graçanicë ) is a country town and the official seat of the municipality of the same name in Kosovo , not far from the capital Pristina .

The Serbian Orthodox monastery Gracanica is one of the most famous monuments of Kosovo and counts since 2006 to UNESCO - World Heritage Site . However, it is on the red list of World Heritage in Danger .

The city is considered a Serbian exclave in central Kosovo because of its Serbian majority.

According to the 2011 census, there are 2686 people in Gračanica. The Serbs are the largest ethnic group with 2090 people (77.81%), followed by the Roma , Ashkali and Balkan Egyptians with 456 people (16.98%). There are also 53 (1.97%) Albanians , 22 (0.82%) Gorans and 9 (0.34%) Bosniaks . 23 belong to other races and 33 people have no answer regarding their ethnic origin.

economy

The economy is mainly based on retail trade and agriculture. The former Swiss diplomat Andreas Wormser has been running the “Hotel Gracanica” in Gračanica since April 2013 (in the original spelling, ç and č are merged into one letter), whose managing directors are Roma. The opening of the hotel generated considerable media coverage.
