Graduate Record Examination

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test for admission to US graduate schools , which is carried out by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) organization. The test is similar to the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), a competitive format administered by Pearson VUE . GMAT is aimed at potential students in business master's programs , while the GRE is aimed at potential doctoral students in various sciences.

In July 2009, the Wharton School decided , after MIT and Stanford , to introduce the GRE for the application process of their MBA programs .

construction

The test consists of three rated parts. In analytical writing, which always takes place at the beginning of the test, the examinee has to write two essays. The first, the so-called Independent Writing Task , requires taking a position on a topic and supporting one's opinion with arguments. The candidate can choose between two topics and has 45 minutes to plan, structure and write the essay. This is followed by the task argument . In this, a chain of arguments must be examined and criticized. The examinee has 30 minutes for this.

The analytical writing is always followed by a ten-minute break. The parts of the test that follow after the break then appear in random order.

Each test includes a verbal reasoning (V). In this the speech comprehension of the examinee should be tested. Antonyms , analogies, inserting words and reading and summarizing are tested . The candidate's English vocabulary is crucial. Test preparation books published for this purpose often have vocabulary lists in the order of 200 to 500 words, Barron's vocabulary list is as long as 3,500 words. All questions are multiple choice .

A quantitative reasoning (Q) also appears in each test . This examines basic mathematical concepts such as arithmetic , algebra and geometry . The requested knowledge corresponds roughly to the curriculum of the upper secondary level .

In addition, each test can contain another Q or V section that is not identified and is not assessed. It is hardly possible for the examinee to judge which of the duplicated sections is false.

It is also possible that an identified research section follows at the end of the test , which also does not count towards the final score.

rating

The evaluation of the analytical writing is done on a scale from 0 to 6 in a half-point interval. The scale of Q and V ranges from 130 to 170 points in a ten-point interval. The average score in the Q section is much higher than that of the V.

criticism

Critics argue that the test solely tests the ability of a student to pass standardized tests. No statement is made about an actual ability to study.

In addition, it is stated that the test describes only a small part of the factors about the ability to study. ETS recommends that the test should not be used as the sole starting point for an exposure.
