Melgueil county

The county of Melgueil ( French Comté de Melgueil ) with the main town of Melgueil (today Mauguio in the Hérault department ) existed before as County Maguelone at the time of the Visigoths .

In the 8th century Melgueil became the seat of the Count, on his behalf the last valuable deniers in southern France were struck here in the 10th century .

At the end of the 11th century , Count Pierre I offered his county to the Pope and took it back from him as a fiefdom in 1085 . The county then came to Raymond VI by marriage . Count of Toulouse , who ceded it to the Pope in 1209 . In 1215 the county was given to the Bishop of Maguelonne .
